Generic Information Provider Information

The Generic Information Provider (or GIP) is a collector of information. It collects information about your system, including information about your batch system, and it provides this information to a higher-level service that wants to publish it. In OSG installations (based on the VDT), the information is provided to CEMon, which in turn publishes it to the OSG's Grid Operations Center, and to a central matchmaking service. The GIP is considered "generic" because it consists of a simple program that interacts with a set of plugins that do the actual information collection and outputs this information in a standard way. The GIP was originally developed as part of the LCG Project, but the current version in the VDT is maintained by people within OSG.
