What Should You Install?
Major Packages
The VDT is a collection of several software packages; most of these
packages provide both client and server components. Many users
install the VDT for a specific reason and never make use of the other
components. For this reason we've designed several task-specific
subsets of the VDT. If you're concerned about installation time, disk
space or just installing unnecessary software you can choose the
package that works best for you.
- VDT
- This package will give you a complete VDT install. You can
see the full list of software on the
components page.
- VDT-Client
- This package will only install the client side software of the
VDT packages. If you want to submit jobs to remote grid sites
this is the package for you.
- VDT-Gatekeeper
- VDT-Gatekeeper includes all the software you'd want for
setting up your own grid site. If installed as root this package
will configure the gatekeeper for you as well. Note that this
package does not include Globus web services, but it will in a
future version of the VDT. For now, you must install them
separately.

Note that these have some overlap. For instance, you'll get
grid-proxy-init in any of these packages.
Globus-Server
Just enough setup to have all the pre-web
services Globus servers (GRAM (gatekeeper), GridFTP and MDS)

Globus-WS-Server
Just enough setup to have all the Globus web
services (WS-GRAM, Reliable File Transfer, Delegation,
WS-MDS)

Globus-Client
Just enough setup to have all the pre-web services Globus
clients such as globus-job-run, grid-info-search, and
globus-url-copy.

Globus-WS-Client
Just enough setup to have all the pre-web services Globus
clients such as globus-job-run, grid-info-search, and
globus-url-copy.

Globus
All of the pre-web services portions of Globus; a combination of
Globus-Server and Globus-Client.

Globus-WS-Server and Globus-WS-Client.

If you like, you can install individual components from the VDT. The
authoritative list can be found in the

- Fetch CRL 2.6.6. Scripts to update certificate revocation lists
- GSIOpenSSH
- GSI-Enabled OpenSSH 4.6. A version of OpenSSH that works with GSI certificates
- GUMS
- GUMS 1.3.17. The Grid User Management System maps grid user certificates to local credentials
- GUMS-Client
- Grid User Management System (GUMS) Client 1.3.17. The client/administrative component of the Grid User Management System
- GUMS-Service
- Grid User Management System (GUMS) Service 1.3.17. The service component of the Grid User Management System

- Globus Data Server 4.0.8. The data management server portion of pre-web services Globus (GridFTP server)
- Globus-Base-Essentials

- Globus Information Services Client 4.0.8. The information management client portion of pre-web services Globus (grid-info-search, etc)

- Globus Web Service Essentials 4.0.8. The essentials needed by all web services.

- Globus Toolkit, web-services 4.0.8. The web service job execution (GRAM) client package.
- Globus-Base-WSGRAM-Server
- Globus Toolkit, web-services 4.0.8. The web service job execution (GRAM) server package.
- Globus-Base-WSMDS-Server
- Globus Web Service MDS Server 4.0.8. The web services version of MDS. There is no client package because it is included in Globus-Base-WS-Essentials.
- Globus-Condor-Setup
- GRAM JobManager and Reporter setup for Condor 4.0.8. Install this after Globus-RM-Server and Condor if you want to use Condor as a jobmanager.
- KX509
- KX509 20031111. KX509 can help you build a public key infrastructure on top of an existing Kerberos install

- UberFTP 2.4. A convenient alternative to globus-url-copy that provides a more user-friendly interface to FTP and GridFTP.
- VOMS
- VOMS 1.8.8-2p1. A combination of VOMS-Server and VOMS-Client
- VOMS-Client
- VOMS Client 1.8.8-2p1. A way to interact with the VOMS server to get X509 certificates with role information in them using voms-proxy-init
- VOMS-Server
- VOMS Server 1.8.8-2p1. The VOMS server and admin interface for running a virtual organization
