System requirements for VDT 2.0.0

Platforms

VDT 2.0.0 is supported on the following platforms:

Notes

• Platform = operating system + architecture
• “Supported” means that we test the platform nightly and that tests are passing.
• You can install the VDT on unsupported platforms if you wish (more details)
• 32-bit installs are possible on x86-64 platforms (more details)
• Not all software is supported on all platforms (more details)
• Known problems exist with software in the VDT (more details)

VDT 2.0.0 used to be supported on more platforms, and you can still install VDT 2.0.0p35 (the version as of February 28, 2012) on the following set of platforms. However, when we provide software updates to the VDT, these platforms will not receive any updates.

• Mac OS X 104, x86
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, x86 and x86-64
• Scientific Linux Fermi Linux 4, x86 and x86-64
• SUSE Linux 9, x86-64

Disk space

VDT 2.0.0 takes different amounts of space depending on the subset of the VDT you install. The complete VDT requires at least 1.5GB.

Pre-installed Software

• Pacman The VDT is installed with Pacman. For VDT 2.0.0 we recommend Pacman 3.28. We require Pacman 3.28 or later: Earlier versions will not work.
• Perl The VDT requires Perl 5.8.0 or greater.
• tar Any version of tar is fine. We do not require GNU tar.
• diff & patch The VDT uses diff and patch. Any recent versions are sufficient.
• inetd/xinetd Either version of the internet “super-server” must be installed and enabled. Any recent version is sufficient.
• If your system has Python 2.3 or later and if you want to install a VOMS server, your system must include the standard xml Python package, often located at

  /usr/lib*/python*/xml

  Most Linux platforms include this Python package as part of their base Python installation, but at least the SLES 9 platform does not. If needed, install the xml package according to your distribution. On SLES 9, we have found that the python-xml-2.3.3-88.1 RPM installs the xml Python package.

SELinux

The VDT does not support SELinux though some of our supported platforms may come with SELinux enabled by default. Be sure to disable SELinux in /etc/sysconfig/selinux before installing the VDT.

Batch system requirements

If you are installing Globus to provide access to PBS or LSF, they will need to be pre-installed. If you will be using the Web Services portion of Globus, the log files for PBS and LSF must be accessible from the gatekeeper node: these log files are read in order to monitor the progress of jobs.

Compatibility Libraries

Given the large number of platforms we support it's unrealistic to build natively on all of them. In most cases a single set of binaries will work just the same, provided that the required compatibility libraries are installed.

When installing Globus-Base-SDK or PyGlobus in 32-bit mode on an x86-64 architecture machine, you need to have the right 32-bit glibc RPMs installed. On RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 AS and Scientific Linux Fermi 4, we have found that 32-bit versions of the following packages are needed:

• glibc
• glibc-devel

On SuSE 9 IA64 (but not x86-64), you will need to install the python-xml rpm
